Sleep Problems of Aging

Sleeping for seniors is quite a problem because elderly people have trouble staying awake in the times when it matters most.

Most of the seniors have problems sleeping at night simply because their sleeping schedule isn’t as normal as that of their younger counterparts. So here are some of the things that you could do if you are a senior and are having problem with getting your shuteye during the night.

Regular does the trick

If you’re able to go to sleep as well as wake up at the same time, even during weekends, then you’ll be able to get enough sleep so that you won’t feel drowsy during the day.

By disciplining yourself to stick to a regular bedtime and wake time, this will essentially allow your body to follow its circadian clock which is the 24-hour internal rhythm that is affected by sunlight. You should try not to nap too much during the day because it might affect how you sleep at night.

Exercise

Nothing gets your muscles tired and you sleep like a mid-day exercise routine. You should try to exercise at regular times every day. Doing so will improve the quality of your nighttime sleep and it will definitely enable you to sleep much more soundly.

An important thing to remember is to try to finish your exercise at least three hours before you go to sleep so you don’t stay up all night because of the adrenaline.

Watch what you eat

It’s important to watch what you eat. Don’t simply drink all the coffee that you want especially if it’s late in the day. Caffeine is a stimulant and it can easily keep you up and awake.

Another thing is if you like to eat something before you sleep, just try eating a few crackers instead of a chocolate cake or maybe something sweet. You can complement this with some warm beverage. Usually milk will do the trick.

Ban alcohol and cigarettes

You have another reason to cut back on those cigarettes at night. That also goes for alcohol. Don’t ever drink or smoke before you sleep. It’s known that even very small quantities of alcohol will make it harder for anyone to stay asleep.

Smoking has been certified dangerous for all the right reasons as it is a stimulant. One of the reasons why you shouldn’t smoke is falling asleep while having a lit cigarette. Unless you want to be burned in your sleep, you better not be smoking
