How to Choose a Sunscreen

There are literally hundreds of sunscreen products available in the market, and every year more products are being introduced. How do we know which is the best product for you? Check out these tips that you should consider when buying sunscreen that is best for you and your family.

Choose the most recently-made product – We are not just talking about opting for the newer brands, but on the more recently-manufactured sunscreen. Check the manufacturing date on the bottle. If it is as old as last year, ditch it. This also goes for you own sunscreen. If you bought your product last summer, then it is best to buy a new one. This is because the shelf life of sunscreen is a bit short. It’s better to spend a few extra dollars than risk getting a burn by using a year-old sunscreen.

Check the SPF level – Every year, newer products are being introduced in the market claiming to have a higher SPF than other products. Although a higher Sun Protection Factor level is generally better, it is not necessarily the case. You need to determine your skin type. Fairer and easily-burned skin has to choose a higher SPF of at least 45 and up, while dark skin should choose at least an SPF of 15 to 30 as the skin’s pigments would naturally have an SPF of 4. Medium tan skin may opt for SPF 30 to 45.

Check the ingredients – The most important ingredient to look for in your sunscreen is Zinc, which absorbs the sun’s rays before it goes into your skin. More recent products even have micronized zinc, making the mineral particles even finer and the product smoother.

The price does not really matter – Expensive name brands versus cheaper non-name brands doesn’t have its advantages, as long as it has the required SPF and zinc. However, if you find a brand that you like because of other factors such as being fragrance-free, oil-free, or having extra moisturizers, you may stick to it.

Consider what to apply on the face – People nowadays buy two different sunscreens: one for the face and the other for the body. Actually, it doesn’t make too much of a difference, although it is best to determine your face’s skin type to find the best product. If you tend to be a little on the oily side, choose an oil-free sunscreen. If you have dry skin, look for one with added moisturizers. If you find a product that you can apply for both your face and body, the better.
