Treatment for High Blood Pressure

People suffering from high blood pressure need not worry about their condition. The earlier high blood pressure can be discovered, the better the chances of treating it and allowing one to live a more normal life. Although it may be a lifelong commitment to control high blood pressure, early treatment can help prevent it from doing its damage on the body over the long term.

There are a wide variety of medications that doctors prescribe to patients who are suffering from high blood pressure. These medicines work differently in trying to lower blood pressure and two or more types are usually used in order to provide better treatment for the condition. The type of treatment would largely depend on the circumstances of the high blood pressure and upon the advice of the physician.

Diuretics

Diuretics belong to a class of medications that is used to effectively treat high blood pressure. This type of medication works by helping the kidneys flush out the excess water as well as the salt from the body. As the amount of fluid is reduced from the blood, the blood pressure usually goes down. Diuretics are usually also called as water pills and are usually taken along with other high blood pressure medication.

Nervous system inhibitors

Another type of medication used to treat high blood pressure is the nervous system inhibitors. This type of medication works by relaxing the blood vessels in the body b controlling the nerve impulses from the brain. Relaxing the blood vessels causes the blood vessels to become wider and lower down the blood pressure.

Vasodilators

Vasodilators are also used to treat high blood pressure. They work by opening up the blood vessels by relaxing the muscles in the vessel walls which can cause the blood pressure to go down. Calcium Channel Blockers or CCB’s are also used to help bring down blood pressure. They work by preventing calcium from entering the muscles cells in the heart and blood vessels. This action causes the blood vessels to relax and lower the blood pressure.

Beta blockers

Beta blockers are used to treat high blood pressure by enabling the heart to beat slower and with less force. As the heart pumps less blood through the blood vessels, the pressure eventually goes down. There are also alpha blockers which can be used to treat high blood pressure by reducing the nerve impulses on the blood vessels.

This allows the blood to pass more easily, causing the blood pressure to go down. There are also medications known as alpha-beta blockers which work by combining the functions of both the alpha and the beta blockers in order to lower high blood pressure.

Others treatment

There are also treatments that make use of Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitors to lower blood pressure. They work by preventing the body from producing a hormone called angiotensin II which is known to cause the blood vessels to narrow.

Doctors also use Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers or ARB’s to protect the blood vessels from the hormone angiotensin II. This allows the blood vessels to relax and become wider, making the blood pressure go down.
