Living with Frequent Headaches

Headache is not a disease but may be a symptom of other illnesses. These diseases include viral infection, strep throat, sinusitis and urinary tract infections but sometimes headaches generally are not that serious. It is common, approximately 50% to 75% of all teens report of having at least one headache per month. Frequent headaches however can be cumbersome.

Headaches are commonly caused by irregular diets, alcohol, caffeine and drug intakes, sleep problems, minor head injuries, eye problems and sometimes, prescribed medications such as birth control pills and tetracycline for acne.

There are different types of headaches:

The migraine

The migraine is a severe headache and one of the most common type. These are headaches that cause pulsating and throbbing head pains. Additional symptoms include pain in the cheeks and sensitivity to light and sound, with nausea. While some migraine can last into few hours, it can stay as long for a few days.

Tension headaches

Tension headaches cause a dull and constant pain around the forehead region, the sides of the head and in some cases, down the neck. This can last from a few minutes to a few hours.

Cluster headache

A rare but very painful type of headache is the cluster headache. As the name implies, the headache occurs since the headache pain happens in clusters and lasts from one to three weeks. These headaches are short ranging but can happen up to eight times a day. It can also be accompanied by stuffy nose, watery eyes and swelling in the pain area. This headache is very rare and is most commonly experienced by men.

Frequent headaches, if the patient failed to relieve it, can lead to depression and other emotional disorders. If frustrated by the experience of headache, one should already seek for medical advise. Start making a headache journal and list the severity, the duration and details on the diet to track whether the headache is food-related. With this, the doctor can easily diagnose a cause. Make sure to get plenty of rest, exercise and good diet for easy recovery.
