The Wonders of Water

waterWater is considered as one of the basic elements of life. It is essential for people to drink at least eight glasses of water to stay healthy and hydrated.

The problem today is that more and more people seem to set drinking water aside in place of other liquid beverages such as coffee, teas and sodas. Although they contain water, drinking such beverages can actually make the body lose out on its water needs.

Facts About Water

For something that is so plentiful, water can be overlooked by many people. Many may not consider just how important water is to the existence of human life. Just think about this- two thirds of our body weight is all water.

Blood is composed of 83 percent water. Muscles in our bodies are 75 percent water. The brain is 74 percent water while our bones is made up of 22 percent water. Now how would that fact change the way you think?

What Water Can Do

Not only that water does a number of wondrous things to our bodies. Water is necessary for our bodies to digest food and to absorb the vitamins and other nutrients.

Water helps detoxify our organs such as the liver and the kidneys. Even water aids in digestion. Fiber alone would not do the job right. Without water, fiber would just make you feel uncomfortable and cause constipation.

When our bodies lack water, it becomes dehydrated. It then affects all the other bodily systems. For one, dehydration can make blood literally become thicker.

This makes it harder for the body to circulate it and transport oxygenated blood to the other parts of the body. As the other parts of the body such as the brain begin to lack oxygen, it does not function properly and causes the body to tire out faster and become fatigued.

Just by drinking enough water daily, different things begin to take effect. Pure water free from contaminants contains no other chemicals or anything unnatural that may harm the body.

Instead eight or more glasses of water a day can help improve one’s energy levels. Since the body is sufficiently hydrated, it can help improve physical and mental performance. Water is also a means to remove toxins and other waste products in the body when it aids in digestion.

Water And Body Weight

Many people may not be aware of it, but drinking enough water everyday may actually help do its bit in weight control. Although studies have shown that water in itself may not cause the body to lose weight, certain factors can be attributed to how water can promote weight control.

The best way that water can aid in weight loss is when it is substituted for high caloric beverages that one usually prefers. But there are also other times when water may help people in weight control.

Drinking a glass of water before a meal can make one feel already a bit full, thereby eating less in the process. The fullness factor of water can be used for people to try and eat less.

Eating foods with high water content usually tend to make one feel fuller with eating less. Moreover, when water is bound to food, it can actually slow down digestion, making one feel full a bit longer.
