Sad Women Wear More Perfume

sad womanWhen you pass by a woman on the street who just reeks of perfume, please do not come up with the worst possible conclusion about why she smells the way she does. She may be depressed you know.

Women who put on too much perfume may not be aware of it because they are depressed. That is according to Dr. Yehuda Shoenfeld, a physician and autoimmune disease researcher at Tel Aviv University in Israel who studies "autoantibodies."

According to Dr. Shoenfeld, their scientific findings suggests that "women who are depressed are also losing their sense of smell", thus the tendency to make up for that by using a lot of perfume.

For their research, Shoenfeld used autoantibodies to cause depression in female mice. They found that the chemicals turned off the olfactory gland cells which are responsible for sense of smell. The treatment plugged the mice’s ability to smell without plugging their noses. And this also caused them to lose weight.

Dr. Shoenfeld says that "Loss of weight is one of the first signs of depression in autoimmune disease patients". It is a bit like when we have colds except out noses are not runny and stuffy. "If you can’t smell, you don’t eat because you don’t enjoy the food. If you don’t eat, you lose weight" adds Shoenfeld.

The question now is if this finding limited to autoimmune disease patients. Shoenfeld thinks it is not, saying "Depression operates similarly in people who do and do not have a disease". Perhaps this is why some men also go overboard with their scents.

There is still, however, a lot of work to be done in what the researcher believes is an "extremely important area". And Shoenfeld feels that there should be more focus on the sense of smell in relation to a person’s health, and even says that we have "neglected smell for a long time".
