What Are Febrile Seizures?

Febrile seizures normally happened during the first few hours of a ever. It is characterized by a strange look in your child followed by sudden stiffening. Your child will then start to twitch and roll his/her eyes and become unresponsive for a while.

Your child’s breathing will appear disturbed and his/her skin will look darker. But after the seizure, your child will return quickly to normal. Febrile seizures last for about a minute, although it can last up to 15 minutes. But this is not common.

What to do when your child has a febrile seizure

You must act fast when your child is suddenly gripped with a febrile seizure.

First, put him/her on the floor or on a bed away from any sharp objects. Turn his/her head to the side so the saliva can drip out of his/her mouth. Do not put anything into your child’s mouth. Contrary to some beliefs, your child will not swallow his/her tongue. Call your doctor immediately.

Treatment for febrile seizures

Have your physician examine you child to find out the cause of his/her fever, since it is what triggered the seizure in the first place. It is more importantly to treat the cause of the fever rather than the seizure. Your physician may perform a spinal tap to check for meningitis, which is a common illness in children aged 1 year old or younger.

Physicians normally do not prescribe a medication for febrile seizures but in case of prolonged or frequent seizures, there maybe a different recommendation. Anti-fever medications like Ibuprofen can help lower fever. However, they do not work on febrile seizures. Usually your doctor will recommend the best way to care for your child’s fever. If you have concerns about febrile seizures, talk to your pediatrician about it.
