Tooth decay or cavities is a common condition in many people who do not practice good and proper dental hygiene. The most common cause of tooth decay is the acid in the mouth. By minimizing the consumption of sugar and carbohydrates, the lesser chances that the teeth have to deal with the acid producing bacteria. Sugar rich snacks as well as candies should be highly avoided in order to prevent tooth decay.

Additional Measures

There are also other means to help avoid tooth decay. Fluoride therapy has been known to help prevent tooth decay. Fluoride can help prevent tooth decay by binding itself to the enamel to make it more resistant to demineralization. Dental sealants may also help protect the chewing surfaces in the molars. Dental sealants are thin plastic-like coating applied on the molars in order to prevent the accumulation of plaque into its deep grooves and fissures.
