Grapefruit Diet

grapefruitThe Grapefruit Diet first became popular during the 80s decade. However the popularity of this diet slowly fluctuated in a downward scale when several nutritionists during those times labeled it as a fad diet. They said that losing weight is actually not due to the grapefruit diet but because of the exaggeratedly low calorie intake which is dangerous.

Nevertheless, two decades from the time that statement was said the Medical Research Center and Scripps Clinic in San Diego backed with new nutritionist, scientist and state of the art facilities the ‘fad diet’ notion was trashed. According to the researchers, having grapefruit as an addition to ones diet can make the dieter lose weight.

"For years, people have talked about the grapefruit diet. Now we have data that grapefruit helps weight loss. Our study participants maintained their daily eating habits and slightly enhanced their exercise routine. The only dietary change was the intake of Florida grapefruit and grapefruit juice." say the expert in nutrition, Dr. Fujioka in one of the research study that he made.

The study that was made by the Medical Research Center includes one hundred obese people divided into three groups. The first group were instructed to eat half a grapefruit before they eat their meals three times a day. The second group was told to drink grape fruit juice before meal three times a day. While the third group was advised not to take neither a grape fruit nor a grapefruit juice. Hence, the only change in the diet is the presence of the grapes.

The effects of grapefruit has been realized after twelve weeks. The first group was able to lose an average of 3.6lb. The second group who drinks grapefruit juice three times a day lost 3.3lb within twelve weeks. While the third group only lost .05lb. According to the researchers, the reason why grapefruit has this capability of making the dieters lose weight is because of its one of a kind plant compounds that reduces insulin levels triggering the dieters body to lose weight.
