Recovering from Depression

Depression can take away your life slowly.  Filling your psyche with sadness, discouragement, and helplessness would only make you feel worse by the day, and would even lead you to more serious health problems.  But it is not too late to save yourself from the dumps.  You need to find a way to relax and de-stress to gradually recover yourself from depression, and watching the television does not count.

Meditation – There are various ways to meditate, each technique has its own level of difficulty.  You can either visit a local establishment that specializes on meditation or you can learn the technique by yourself.  But one thing is for sure, in order to meditate successfully you need to practice it in a peaceful place free from outside noise.  Try to clear your mind by focusing on a thought, word, or phrase.  You could also try slowly tightening and then relaxing each muscle in the body, starting from your toes and moving up to the crown of your head.

Yoga – Just like meditation, there are different yoga schools, and some are more physically demanding than others.  You can either learn it by watching videos at home or by taking classes.

Breathing exercises – Spend at least twenty minutes a day doing nothing but breathing deeply.  This can help you clear your mind as you focus on your breathing.

Biofeedback – This alternative treatment, with the help of a qualified therapist, can let you control certain automatic physical functions such as blood pressure, heart rate, skin temperature, sweat gland activity, and muscle tension.  A computer then records the data and you see the results on screen in real time.  This technique can help you keep calm when you are in an anxious situation.

Massage or hypnosis – Other forms of relaxation from depression include massage or hypnotic therapy.  While a massage can help you ease muscle tension caused by stress, hypnosis can veer your attention away from situations that trigger depression.  Ask around for recommendations on whom to consult for such therapies.

Self relaxation – You can recover yourself out of depression without shedding your purse.  Try listening to soothing music like jazz, new age, or classical; go for long walks at a park; or take a long, hot bath.
