Does Watching Sex on Television Influence Teens Sexual Activity

Teenagers who watch television that contains sexual content are twice more likely to engage in sexual intercourse in comparison to those who watch little. This is according to a study conducted by RAND Corporation.

Aside from sexual intercourse, those youths who watch considerable amount of television shows that has sexual content have a greater chance of initiating sexual acts or activities other than sexual intercourse such as oral sex or intense kissing while fondling body parts.

Based upon a study published in an issue of Pediatrics, those adolescents who fall under this category tend to act like their peers who are less than ten to twenty months their senior but have watched only an average amount of television programs with sexual content.

As television is seen as the best instrument in influencing other people, it can do that as well in encouraging adolescents to have sexual intercourse as well as other activities. The impact it causes among adolescents is so great even there is a slight inclination toward sexual content in a particular television program it totally affects their sexual conducts substantially.

What was even more alarming is the fact that television seem to dictate how far they should go when engaging in sexual activities or if they already had experienced sex for the first time. This goes for programs that are sexually-inclined, whether they are talk shows or those that portray sexual behaviors.

However, in a study conducted among African-American adolescents, those who have watched videos featuring awareness on the risks and safety methods involving sex are less likely to engage in a sexual behavior in the following year. Holistically, two-thirds of all the entertainment programs shown in television have sexual content.

The effects of sexually-oriented programs has identified several other factors linked primarily to truancy, such as, having friends older than him or her, acting old for his or her age, grades getting lower, breaking rules, skipping classes and wanting to be a crowd sensation.

The possibility of adolescents getting initiated with sexual intercourse can be hindered if the parents:

  • are monitoring their activities
  • had finished their education
  • never approved of their having sexual relations at their age
  • are together
  • are mentally healthy
  • are religious

Proper guidance is required for adolescents so as not to confuse the correct social norms with what they usually see on television. Because there are factors that stimulate sexual behavior, there should also be something that guides and monitors it.
