Caring for Skin of Color

There are a myriad of myths and hearsays about African-American skin. While most of these can be easily brushed off, one proven fact about African-American skin is that it is supersensitive. On one hand, research suggests that black skin is less susceptible to certain skin diseases because it enhances the body’s natural immune system to a greater extent compared to white skin.

But this is not to say that black skin is tough and resistant to the damaging effects of natural elements. In fact, black skin pigmentation often has a strong adverse reaction to wrong beauty products.

To maintain your skin’s smooth, rich tone, top dermatologists reiterate the importance of the following reminders:

Cleanse your face daily

Do not forget to cleanse your face. You can do it in the morning and at night, but if your goal is to remove excess oil from your face, it is best to cleanse your face more frequently. As long as you use mild products on your skin, you will not encounter skin blemishes such as pimples, acne and zits.

Use products that best fit your skin type

Skin care experts don’t recommend fancy and expensive products. According to them, drugstore brands will usually do. Their primary concern is to use products that are designed for your skin type.

Slather on Sunscreen

While it is true that darker skin helps ward off skin cancer, it still is not totally free from the sun’s UV rays. The advice of dermatologists? Apply and reapply sun protection often, particularly when you’re in direct sunlight.

Do not neglect skin problems

Prevention is indeed better than cure. Before experiencing an onset of acne, pimples and skin irritations, get help immediately to prevent a more severe skin condition.

Less is more

Go for the natural look. You don’t have to wear too much make up on a daily basis as this will only speed up the aging process for your skin. Opt for less makeup and while you’re at it, choose makeup that is suited for your skin tone. Oil-based makeup is best for dry skin while water-based makeup is advised for acne-prone and oily skin.
