Nutrition for New Moms

Mothers cannot afford to do just about anything with their newborns. But if you are new at parenting, you might not know what you need to do to take care of your baby, while ensuring his or health at the same time. But aside from ensuring that your baby is healthy and well, you also have a responsibility to take care of yourself.

You probably want to get rid off of the extra pounds you gained when you were still pregnant. Because you need the stamina to take care of your baby, you are more or less obliged to eat healthy foods. In other words, a crash diet is not a good option, if you are breastfeeding your baby.

To make sure that you and your baby are meeting the right amount of nutrients, you should include these foods in your diet:

Salmon

Salmon is one of the ideal foods for mothers because it is loaded with DHA, an essential nutrient to the development of your baby.

Actually, DHA can be found on mothers’ milk. However, the amount of DHA found in mothers’ milk is not as rich when the mother is not eating foods that are rich in this nutrient.

Legumes

Legumes, like red beans and kidney beans, are a rich source of protein and iron, two of the nutrients that are essential for your baby’s health.

Eggs

You might not be aware of this fact, but eggs are one of the few natural sources of Vitamin D. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for you and your baby’s bones. So if you want your baby to grow with healthy bones, start eating eggs.

Whole Wheat Bread

Whole wheat bread is fortified with folic acid and iron. These are vital nutrients for your baby as he or she goes through the early stages of development. Eat whole wheat bread so that you may pass off these nutrients to your newborn.

Water

Dehydration is one of the energy drains that you must avoid. You can vary your options by taking in milk and juice as well, but majority of your hydration intake should come from water because it also washes out toxins and detoxifies your body.

Eating healthy foods may induce weight gain, or it may keep you from losing weight. Do not worry. You have all the time in the world to follow a strict diet to make you lose weight. The important thing now is for you to be healthy so that your baby can be healthy, too.
