Choosing The Right Sport For You

A lot of kids enjoy playing different sports. There are even kids who are good a number of sports that choosing just one sport to pursue in school can be difficult.

Fun factor

Some people have difficulty deciding which sports to pursue because they have never participated in a truly organized sport before and aren’t sure what to expect. Some can’t decide because they aren’t sure which sport they enjoy playing most. And then there are those who can’t choose because, although they enjoy playing a certain sport, they want to be with friends who enjoy different sports.

Try out

Remember that there is no rule that says you can’t try out for different sports. Just go ahead and try out for those that you like, even if you think you can’t make the team. If you get cut, try out for another sport. And if you excel in one sport, but one to try out for another that you think is more enjoyable, try out for that too. You can always switch sports next season.

Team sports and individual sports

Team sports requires members to be on the same page and to work together. A lot of people enjoy team sports because of the team spirit, the sense of belongingness. You also get all sorts of people in team sports which adds to the enjoyment.

If team sports are too crowded for you, then maybe you can try out for individual sports like tennis, swimming, track and field, gymnastics, etc. Individual players’ scores are chalked up into team scores. It’s common to have individuals win solo events and still have the entire team lose.

Whether you are into team sports or individual sports, there is no denying that the thrill of competition and the popularity and hero-worship are the additional reasons why kids enjoy playing.

Sports alternatives

If you aren’t into organized sports, team or individual, try for these really cool alternatives:

Rock climbing – or wall climbing. This sports is perfect for people who enjoy challenging themselves. Rock climbing can be a little frightening to beginners since you only have yourself and your harness to rely on. Eventually, you’ll get the hang of it. Rock climbing also provides one of the best all-around workouts.

Hiking – hiking is for curious, adventurous and nature-loving souls. These people get a thrill out of seeing new paths or trails and can’t wait to see what’s waiting to be discovered. You can also ride your bike on your hiking trips. Make sure you bring another person with you, in case of emergencies. For intense hikes, take someone who is trained and experienced.

Water sports – water sports are very exciting and challenging. You can go can go canoing, kayaking or fishing. If you are into more fast-paced, and challenging sports, opt for rowing, sailing, water skiing, windsurfing or wakeboarding, or surfing.

Meditation – activities that exercise both the mind and body can be very soothing and calming – yet they can still give you a good over-all physical workout.

Yoga – improves balance and flexibility, and increases strength and stamina. At the same time, it reduces stress and anxiety, and helps clear the mind.

T’ai chi – an ancient form of Chinese martial arts that improves flexibility and strengthens leg, abdominal, and arm muscles.

Pilates – is a stretching or a body conditioning routine that increases strength and endurance, and enhances flexibility and coordination, minus the bulging muscles. This routine also improves circulation and helps sculpt or tone the body and strengthen the torso. Practitioners claim that they have improved posture and better overall health due to Pilates.

If your school does not offer your sports, check if it’s offered by organizations or leagues in your town. And lastly, if you are into more than one sport, allow your body to get some time off from intense workouts and competitions.

To stay in shape though, you can do cross-training workouts. For instance, cycling and sit-ups/push-ups. Cycling strengthens the legs, while sit-ups/push-ups tone the upper body. Don’t forget to get a medical check-up first before trying out for these sports.
