How to Improve Self-Esteem

Mikala’s mind is wandering as she walks home. She thinks, "Oh, I’m going to fail again on this biology exam. My mom’s right, I’d end up just like her. I’ll never be a great person." Unfocused, she touches her face and thinks how ugly she is. She says to herself, "Ugh, I bet the theater club won’t even let me audition when they see what a loser I am."

Self-image and self-esteem

All of us create a mental picture of what we are good at, what our weaknesses are, how we look, and in general, who we are. This mental picture is our self-image, which is largely based on our life experiences and our interactions with other people. Our self-image affects our self-esteem. Positive self-image means higher self-esteem. On the other hand, negative self-image means lower self-esteem.

Self-esteem relates to how much people feel loved, accepted, and valued by others, and how much they love, accept, and value themselves. In general, people with high self-esteem may value their own worth, feel good about themselves, and recognize their skills, abilities, and accomplishments. Those with low self-esteem, however, may feel bad about themselves, as if they suck at everything or that no one will accept or like them.

Importance of self-esteem

Self-esteem is important because how we see ourselves can significantly affect our lives. In general, teens who feel they are lovable and likable have better relationships. On the other hand, those who look down on themselves are less likely to form good relationships.

Teens who have high self-esteem are more likely to perform better in school than those who have low self-esteem. Feeling good about yourself enables you to accept who you are and live your life to the fullest.

Improving self-esteem

Improving your self-esteem means empowering yourself. If you want to have a higher self-esteem, then be positive and do not entertain negative thoughts about yourself. You also have to view your mistakes as learning opportunities. Turn the negative into positive. Do not aim for perfection; rather, aim for accomplishments. You must recognize the things that you can change and the things that you cannot.

Here are other suggestions to improve your self-esteem: try new things, set goals, make a contribution, and take pride in your ideas and opinions and do not be afraid to express them. Importantly, just have fun and stop worrying.
