Sleep and Memory

Sleep does not just affect the physical functioning of a person. It also affects how one thinks and remembers. People may be mistaken for thinking that they can do more things if they sleep less, but the quality of what they can do can actually be affected by sleep. Not only that, the ability of how one remembers things can also be affected by lack of sleep.

Effect on Memory

Studies have shown a connection between poor memory and lack of sleep. Certain types of memory can be affected by lack of sleep. Although some experiments showed that lack of sleep may not affect recognizing faces, it may somehow affect memory that concerns association. Although sleep deprived subjects could recognize faces, they had difficulty in trying to associate where they first saw the faces in photos.

Memory and Caffeine

People have long used caffeine in order to reduce sleepiness and improve their concentration levels especially when lacking sleep. Caffeine can also help improve the level of memory recall, but it still falls below the level of recall memory that non-sleep deprived subjects have. Studies show that caffeine does not seem to enhance the ability of recall on people who were not deprived of sleep.

Sleep and Mental Performance

People who are deprived of sleep also experience decreased mental and problem solving performance. Not only that, many sleep deprived people also find it more difficult to learn new things in their condition. Sleep and the lack of it can drastically affect one’s learning ability as well as retention.

Sleep Deprivation Effects

Experts have linked the effects of sleep deprivation to that of aging. Studies have shown that lack of sleep has produced certain changes to the body’s glucose tolerance and endocrine function that can also be found in aging. Sleep loss actually may contribute to people suffering earlier from age related conditions such as memory loss as well as hypertension, obesity and other similar diseases.
