Probiotics

Probiotics are live bacteria that you can actually ingest. They will go down the same route as the food you consume. Priobiotics are the same type of bacteria as those found naturally in your digestive system. These bacteria perform several important tasks. What probiotics do is aid in the digestive process, and absorption of nutrients and minerals. They also boost the immune system and bring overall balance to the environment inside the digestive tract.

Probiotics can be found in foods such as yogurt. You can also buy probiotic supplements that contain only the specific type that you need. Some priobiotics are believed to help colic in babies. Some are thought to aid in digestion and prevent and/or cure diarrhea.

Prebiotics

Prebiotics on the other hand, are specific nutrients, often non-absorbable carbohydrates like fructo-oligosaccharides. They naturally occur in whole grains, fruits and legumes. Unlike probiotics, prebiotics are not bacteria. They simply stimulate the bacteria in the digestive tract to either grow or become more active, thus increasing digestive health.
