Understanding Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety and anxiety disorders are not entirely the same. Anxiety is a condition considered as quite normal in daily life. People may feel anxious at one time or another. Some bouts of anxiety may even help one become more focused, motivated and energized. This holds true for people experiencing mild to moderate anxiety.

Anxiety disorders on the other hand covers a variety of conditions wherein anxiety is taken to its more serious and abnormal forms. Anxiety can cause certain physical and emotional symptoms that usually go away after a certain event or situation passes.

But in the case of anxiety disorders, these physical and emotional symptoms seem to linger and stay on for an abnormally longer period of time. The symptoms associated with the anxiety disorders can eventually affect one’s daily activities and how one gets along with others. It is at this time that the anxiety already becomes abnormal and might require professional medical help.

Types Of Anxiety Disorders

There are various types of anxiety disorders affecting people today. There is the generalized anxiety disorder that is characterized by feelings of long lasting anxiety that is not usually focused on a certain object or situation. It is a type of anxiety disorder where a person seems to experience a non-specific but persistent fear and anxiety that eventually affects one’s everyday life.

Panic Disorder

Panic disorder is another type of anxiety disorder characterized by brief and sudden but intense attacks of worry, terror and fear. They are usually followed by physical symptoms that may include confusion, nausea, difficulty breathing and dizziness. The attack can last for hours and can be brought about by certain factors such as fear, stress and even exercise.

Phobias

Phobia is another condition that is considered to belong to the different types of anxiety disorders. They are some irrational and extreme fears that people seem to experience that can sometimes be out of proportion to the actual situation. Some people may be aware of their fears and that their reactions to such are not quite considered normal, but they are still quite helpless in trying to control the fears.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a type of anxiety disorder that is a result of a person’s traumatic experience in the past. Post-traumatic stress disorder or PSTD can occur as a result of exposure to extreme situations such as accidents, combat, rape and other similar stressful events and experiences. Long term exposure to severe stressors can also result in PSTD which can cause certain symptoms such as depression, avoidance behavior and severe flashbacks.
