When the body is under too much stress, it starts to increase producing the hormone cortisol to cope up. Cortisol can disrupt the skin’s ability to absorb moisture and hold on to it. This can result in moisture loss in the skin which leads to dryness and reduces skin luminosity.
Stress can result in increased blood flow. This can further lead to capillaries to expand, causing skin redness. Stress can also worsen a skin condition called rosacea which is characterized by flushing and redness of certain areas of the skin. Since stress may also weaken the immune system, rosacea flare ups may also last longer for some people.
Fine Lines And Wrinkles
Cortisol, a hormone that the body increasingly produces when stressed, can also cause fine lines to form in the skin. This hormone can cause an elevation in blood sugar levels which in turn may lead to damage of collagen and elastin in the skin through a process called glycation. Collagen and elastin are the protein fibers in the skin that keep it plump and smooth.
Stress can also increase cases of skin inflammation. This can lead to acne breakouts that become an unsightly problems for some people.
